Same Mirror Different Light

Verse 1

I pull the chair in like it’s always been mine,

same worn wood, same drawer that sticks every time.

The bathroom hums in a Sunday kind of hush,

sunlight slipping through the blinds like it doesn’t want to rush.

My daughter leans in, half nervous, half sure,

tiny hands learning every line I’ve worn before.

And I hear my mother in the way I say “hold still,”

like time didn’t leave us it just learned new ways to feel.

Pre-Chorus

I pause a second too long,

and in that mirror I swear something’s gone… and not gone.

Chorus

Same mirror, same frame, same little silver crack,

three generations leaning forward, looking back.

I see where my mother used to stand,

now it’s my daughter with a brush in her hand.

And I swear in the glass when the light hits just right,

I see my mama’s face for a flicker of light.

Not gone, not far, just out of sight

living on in the same mirror, different light.

Verse 2

I say “don’t overdo it, baby, just be you,”

and it cuts through me like it always used to.

‘Cause that’s what I was told in a voice that still stays,

same love, same hands, just different names.

My daughter turns, asks “Was Grandma like this too?”

and I nod slow like truth has more than one view.

Some things don’t leave when bodies do,

they just change hands and start something new.

Pre-Chorus

And the mirror doesn’t judge what I’ve become,

it just remembers where we’re all from…

Bridge

And for a moment it shifts, like the room holds its breath,

no past, no future, no word for death.

Just three versions of me in a quiet display,

blending like echoes that refuse to fade away.

I see my mother’s young eyes where my daughter now stands,

like time folded softly, like it’s part of the plan.

Final Chorus

Same mirror, same frame, but everything has changed,

love keeps rewriting what time tried to name.

I’m not just remembering I finally see,

they didn’t leave, they just live through me.

And I smile through the glass, letting tears be alright,

‘cause I hold them both here in the same soft light

my mother, my daughter, and somewhere inside,

I’m the bridge that keeps them all alive.
