Secret Word Scavenger Hunt Official Rules

Sunday, October 18, 2026 • Downtown Henderson, Kentucky

Get ready for a little Halloween fun in downtown Henderson! Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ is a family-friendly Secret Word scavenger hunt designed to get families walking, window-shopping, exploring downtown, and seeing how many official Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ displays they can find.

Before You Begin

Before your family is considered part of the hunt, one adult age 18 or older representing the family must complete the Participation Agreement & Safety Acknowledgment form.**(at the bottom of this page)**

You may complete the form online before leaving home, or scan the START HERE QR code on any official Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ display when you arrive downtown.

Once the form has been completed, your family is ready to hunt.

How to Play

1. We recommend starting at the Henderson Welcome Center.

2. From there, simply walk through downtown Henderson, enjoy the shops, look through storefront windows, and keep your eyes open for official Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ displays.

3. Hints will be available on RobSmithWrites.com to help you figure out which downtown businesses and locations are participating.

4. Each participating location will display an official Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ sheet containing:

   • one unique Secret Word,

   • a START HERE QR code, and

   • a FINISHED? ENTER HERE QR code.

5. When you find a Secret Word, write it down or save it on your phone.

6. You do not need to scan a QR code or submit anything every time you find a Secret Word. Just keep walking, window-shopping, and collecting as many Secret Words as your family wants to find.

7. You do not have to find every Secret Word to enter.

8. When your family is finished hunting, scan the FINISHED? ENTER HERE QR code on any official display and submit one final entry per family containing the required family/contact information and all of the Secret Words your family found.

9. A valid entry must be submitted on October 18, 2026 and include at least one correct Secret Word.

***If the form at the bottom is not completed you are not considered part of the hunt.***

Please enjoy the scavenger hunt safely and respectfully.

The hunt area is within downtown Henderson, from Water Street to Elm Street and from First Street to Second Street, including those streets.

Follow all traffic and pedestrian laws, use designated crossings, and respect all public and private property and businesses, whether participating or not.

**Prizes & Drawing**

**Every family submitting a valid entry will receive a printable Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ coloring sheet and word finder via email..**

*Families who correctly find and submit their official Secret Words will qualify for the Grand Prize drawing.

*If no family finds every Secret Word, the three highest number of correct Secret Words will qualify for the Grand Prize drawing.

*If a tie at the cutoff would result in more than three qualifying families, all families tied at that level will qualify.

One qualifying family will be selected at random to receive:

1.An autographed copy of The Magic of Merryfin Sparkshoe™ by Rob Smith,

‍&

2. A $25 Henderson Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificate valid at over 50 participating businesses.

** Making a purchase from any participating business does not increase a family’s chances of winning.**

**Safety rules & Disclaimer**

Participants must:

• Obey all traffic and pedestrian laws.

• Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks whenever available.

• Remain in public areas and areas normally open to customers.

• Follow the posted rules and normal business hours of each participating location.

• Never enter private, employee-only, closed, restricted, or unsafe areas.

• Never trespass, climb on structures, enter roadways unnecessarily, or engage in unsafe behavior to locate a Secret Word.

• Never move, remove, damage, or alter an official Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ display.

• Be aware of traffic, weather, uneven walking surfaces, crowds, steps, curbs, storefront entrances, and other ordinary conditions encountered while walking through a downtown area.

• Respect all property at all times, whether it is public or private, participating or non-participating.

*Participation in Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ does not give anyone permission to enter, cross, search, touch, move, climb on, or otherwise use property that would not ordinarily be open or available to the public.*

No Secret Word will ever require a participant to trespass, climb, enter a dangerous or restricted location, disturb property, or leave an area normally accessible to the public.

Safety, Assumption of Risk & Responsibility

Participation in Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ is voluntary.

Walking through downtown areas, crossing streets, entering businesses, and visiting public locations involve ordinary risks, including but not limited to traffic, weather conditions, uneven sidewalks or surfaces, steps, curbs, pedestrians, crowds, slips, trips, falls, and other conditions that may ordinarily be encountered in public places.

By participating, the adult participant, parent, or legal guardian acknowledges these ordinary risks and accepts responsibility for exercising reasonable care and for the supervision and safety of all minors participating with that family.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, participants agree that Rob Smith Writes, Rob Smith, participating businesses and community organizations, property owners, and their respective employees, representatives, volunteers, and agents are not responsible for injury, loss, theft, or property damage resulting from the ordinary risks of voluntary participation in the scavenger hunt.

Nothing in these rules is intended to waive or limit any right or liability that cannot lawfully be waived or limited under applicable law.

Participants remain responsible for their own conduct, personal belongings, transportation, and compliance with applicable laws.

Participating Businesses

Participating businesses and community organizations are primarily display locations for Merryfin’s Scary Spin™.

Unless specifically stated otherwise, participating locations do not administer the contest, verify entries, determine qualifiers, select winners, or provide or fulfill prizes. Questions regarding the hunt, entries, rules, or prizes should be directed to Rob Smith Writes.

Entry & Winner Administration

Only one final entry may be submitted per family.

Only official Secret Words from authorized Merryfin’s Scary Spin™ locations will count toward qualification.

Rob Smith Writes reserves the right to reject entries that are fraudulent, intentionally falsified, duplicated in violation of these rules, or otherwise fail to comply with the official rules.

The Grand Prize winner will be selected randomly from the qualifying families and contacted using the information submitted with the entry.

If the selected winner cannot be contacted within a reasonable period stated in the winner notification, another qualifying family may be selected.

Rob Smith Writes may modify, postpone, suspend, or cancel part or all of the hunt if weather, safety concerns, circumstances beyond reasonable control, or other conditions make continuation impractical or unsafe.

By completing the Participation Agreement & Safety Acknowledgment form before beginning the hunt, the participating adult confirms that they have read and agree to these Official Rules and Safety Disclaimer on behalf of their family.
